Terra Nova - Jan Gunnar Hoff

I 2015 gjorde jeg et par konserter med mezzosopranen Marianne Beate Kielland. I 2016 modnet ideen om en plateutgivelse med musikk som vi begge hadde et forhold til. Før vår duoturné våren 2016 skrev jeg ny musikk til tekster av Knut Hamsun og William Blake og omarbeidet noen av mine eldre komposisjoner for kor og jazzgruppe, til piano og vokal. Vi fant også fram til noen klassikere som vi ønsket å ha med på platen, Halvdan Sivertsens Nordaførr Vårvisa, Jerusalem (Blake/Parry) og Barndomsminne fra Nordland (Blix/Thomsen). Med ulik bakgrunn fra klassisk og jazz beveget vi oss inn i Terra Novas klangverden for å prøve å skape et eget «univers». Resultatet fra innspillingen i Stamsund kirke hører du på albumet Terra Nova, utgitt av LAWO Classics i april 2017.

Dette noteheftet inneholder alle stykkene fra plateutgivelsen. Musikken er notert for å kunne spilles og framføres av piano og vokal. Pianostemmen kan spilles som notert eller varieres kompmessig i forhold til besifringen, slik pianisten finner det naturlig. Bruk gjerne CD-utgivelsen som en referanse. Som komponist er jeg opptatt av å prøve å skrive gode og sangbare tema. Med dette noteheftet håper jeg andre kan få glede av å framføre musikken fra Terra Nova.

JAN GUNNAR HOFF

er født i Bodø i 1958 og fikk klassisk pianoundervisning fra 10 års- alderen. Han studerte ved Jazzlinja på NTNU og tok senere en videreutdanning i komposisjon på NMH. Han har vært freelancemusiker siden 1979 og har spilt med internasjonale størrelser som Alex Acuña, Mike Stern, Pat Metheny, Maria João og Marilyn Mazur. Hoff ble i 2014 tildelt den prestisjetunge Buddy-prisen, norsk jazz sin høyeste utmerkelse, og fikk samme år status som Steinway & Sons Artist. Som komponist har Hoff skrevet over 200 verk og han ble i 2004 belønnet med Edvardprisen fra Tono for sitt korverk Meditatus. Jan Gunnar Hoff er professor ved Norges arktiske universitet i Tromsø (UiT) og Universitetet i Agder (UiA).



TERRA NOVA

I performed several concerts with mezzo-soprano Marianne Beate Kielland in 2015. By 2016, the time was ripe to release a recording of music to which we both felt a strong connection. Before our duo tour in the spring of 2016, I wrote new music to texts by Knut Hamsun and William Blake, and reworked some of my older compositions for choir and jazz group to piano and vocals. We also rediscovered some classics we wanted to include on the recording: Halvdan Sivertsen?s Nordaførr Vårvisa, Jerusalem (Blake/Parry) and Barndomsminne from Nordland (Blix/Thomsen). With our differing backgrounds from classical music and jazz, we ventured into the tonal world of

Terra Nova in an attempt to create our own ?universe?. The result of the recording session in Stamsund Church can be heard on the album Terra Nova, released by LAWO Classics in April of 2017.

This compilation contains all of the pieces from the Terra Nova recording. The music is notated for performance by piano and voice. The piano part can be played as written or interpreted more freely with the accompanying chord symbols, whichever the pianist finds more natural. The Terra Nova CD can be an important reference in this respect.

As a composer, my principal focus is on writing good, lyrical themes. I hope that this compilation can give others the joy of performing the music from Terra Nova.



JAN GUNNAR HOFF

was born in Bodø in 1958 and began classical piano lessons at age ten. He studied in the jazz programme at the Trondheim Conservatory of Music, and as a student of composition at the Norwegian Academy of Music. Since 1979 he has been a freelance musician, performing with international musical celebrities such as Alex Acuña, Mike Stern, Pat Metheny, Maria João and Marilyn Mazur.

In 2013 he received the prestigious Buddy Prize, the highest distinction in Norwegian jazz, and in 2014 he was appointed an official Steinway & Sons Artist. As a composer Hoff has written more than 200 works. His jazz mass Meditatus, received the Edvard (Grieg)- prize in 2004. Jan Gunnar Hoff is professor at The Arctic University of Norway (UiT) and the University of Agder (UiA).
