Coronation March - BB

This Coronation March is from the opera Le Prophète (The Prophet) by Giacomo Meyerbeer and was arranged for brass band by James Smyth. The march was performed during a series of brass band events which took place at the Crystal Palace, London 1860 - 1863. Enderby Jackson was the organiser of these historically important occasions and also conducted the massed band concerts.

Ray Farr (born 1948 Hereford, England) was educated at the Birmingham School of Music and at the Royal Academy of Music, London. After 10 years as a professional trumpet and flugelhorn player with the BBC Radio Orchestra, he started his career as a conductor. He works with orchestras, wind bands and brass bands on a worldwide freelance basis. He is an experienced and recognized conductor, arranger and adjudicator. In 2019 he was awarded the Iles Medal by the London Worshipful Company of Musicians, for significant contributions to the brass band movement. As a composer and arranger, he has published more than a 100 works. Ray is also the author of The Distin Legacy the Rise of the Brass band in 19th-Century Britain (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2013) as well as An Introduction to Conducting (Jagrins, 2007). His increasing interest in the history of brass bands has triggered research activity, the completion of a Master s degree in Arts and the ongoing studies for a doctorate. The collection of scholarly editions forms an important part of his research into early brass bands and in particular the Distin Family.
