DECK THE HALLS
Denne velkjente julesangen er opprinnelig walisisk («Nos galan»), men har blitt internasjonalt kjent under sin engelske tittel «Deck the Halls». Melodien dateres tilbake til 1500-tallet.

Sangen er kort og meget repeterende, derfor har jeg forsøkt å presentere den i flere stiler og med svært variert uttrykk. Det er viktig å ta vare på det rytmiske drivet i første og siste del, her bør man fokusere på tydelighet i kompet og en syngende melodilinje.
Starten av stykket minner mest om en juleovertyre, men har også henvisninger til den nesten renessanseaktige stil som sangen innehar.
Midtdelen av stykket skal være meget «lush», svært fargerik og melodiøs, og med ganske klare jazz-aktige rubatoer.
Inn i siste del har vi enda mer driv og høyere tempo enn i starten, her med en nesten storband-lignende driv i kompet. Gå for de lange linjene, og pass på at musikken blir horisontal, ikke vertikal og stasjonær.

DECK THE HALLS
The original Welsh song «Nos galan» dating back to the sixteenth century, has become an international Christmas carol with the English lyric «Deck the hall with boughs of holly».

The song does not offer much in terms of variation, but I have tried to construct a short piece where one can see that the song still offers itself to a wide array of stylistical treatments.
The opening is almost like a Christmas Overture, before it wanders in to a «renaissance»-like style.
The middle section offers a much more «lush» and lyrical rubato treatment, with lots of color and thick harmonization.
The end then turns the tempo even more up than at the start of the piece, and brings us through a «big band» ending with long soaring lines.

JOHN PHILIP HANNEVIK
John Philip Hannevik ble født i Tromsø i 1970. Han er utdannet sosionom, og har også hovedfag i musikkvitenskap fra Universitetet i Oslo.
Philip arbeider på heltid som dirigent, arrangør og utøver. Han har dirigert brassband, janitsjarkorps og symfoniorkestre på toppnivå i Norge, og han har arrangert og dirigert for noen av Norges fremste artister, slik som Sissel Kyrkjebø, Rein Alexander, Halvdan Sivertsen, Lars Martin Myhre og Bjørn Eidsvåg. Han har deltatt som arrangør og musiker på en rekke CD-innspillinger, flere av disse har solgt til platina. Philip var finalist ved EBBAs internasjonale dirigentkonkurranse 2003, og han har reist som dirigent i en rekke land i Europa, Afrika, Nord- og Sør-Amerika. Philip har blant annet skrevet arrangementet til "Mitt hjerte er ditt" med artisten Hilde Heltberg, en sang som lå 9 uker på første plass på NRK Norsktoppen.


JOHN PHILIP HANNEVIK
John Philip Hannevik was born in Tromsø, Norway, in January 1970. He holds a master s degree in Musicology and has a bachelor s degree in social work.
Philip has been working as a full-time musician throughout much of his adult life, among other things as a musical advisor for the Salvation Army. He has conducted all possible types of ensembles, he has written music for classical artists, brass bands, pop- and contemporary singers/ bands, and for TV. He is a prize-winner from EBBAs International Conductors Competition. As a musician he has toured Africa, North- and South America, visited approximately 15 countries in Europe, and has conducted ensembles in many of the finest Concert Halls and studios in Scandinavia. He has worked with several of the top conductors, soloists, and bands within the band movement. He has also participated as a musician or arranger on several platinum-awarded CD's. He has even written a full brass arrangement for a contemporary singer the song held the no 1 spot on the charts of Norway s biggest National Radio station for 9 weeks.
