The Polish Suite for Marimba (2019-2022) is dedicated to the outstanding marimbist Filip Mercep. The individual parts of the Suite commemorate lesser-known Polish composers of the 20th century.
Artists born in pre-war Poland had traumatic experiences of World War II behind them, and they collided with the post-war reality of the People's Republic of Poland - a country in immediate sphere of influence of communism. The Congress of Composers in Lagów Lubuski 1949 proclaimed socialist realism in new Polish music and divided the composing community. The declared oppositionists were excluded from the musical life. Some composers chose to emigrate, while others, remaining in the country, were exposed to the lack of means of subsistence, harassment by the authorities and forced to painful compromises. For many years, their works remained unjustly forgotten. Each of the 5 parts of the Suite commemorates a different composer, starting with a reference to one of his works.
