This selection from the opera Robert le Diable, composed by Giacomo Meyerbeer, was arranged by James Smyth. Enderby Jackson commissioned the arrangement which was used as the test piece for the National Brass Band Contest held at the Crystal Palace, London in 1862. Jackson?s historically important series of national contests, which ran from 1860 ? 1863, later became the National Brass Band Championships and is still running today, held at the Royal Albert Hall, London and other locations. The contest, held on 9th September 1862, was just one of the attractions during the day which included a massed band concert with 30 bands (nearly 400 musicians) conducted by the organiser Enderby Jackson. My aim is to make a scholarly performing edition, clearing ambiguities and errors that can be enjoyed by today?s performers and listeners, bearing in mind the original purpose, function and context.

The purpose of this edition is to give modern bands an opportunity to perform a valuable work from band history and at the same time to take an analytical, musicological study into one of the rare treasures of the repertory.
